Thanasis Hadzilacos



Professor of Information Systems, Open University of Cyprus ( ) academic director of the graduate program in Information Systems, (born 1953). Until 2007 Dean of the School of Science and Technology at the Hellenic Open University (HOU), ) where he served as associate professor of Soft­ware Engineering, directed the Open and Distance Laboratory for Educational Material and Educational Methodology, the graduate course on Information Systems and the undergraduate Computer Science course. Educated at Harvard, USA, he had substantial industrial experience before joining Computer Technology Institute ( ) in 1986, where he continues as a researcher. He has taught at the Universities of Patras and Thessaly before joining the Hellenic Open University. During 1996-2001 he designed and managed the Greek national project “Odysseia” ( ) for the utilization of Information and Communication Technologies in secondary education. He has served as a member of the Council of Europe working group for Teaching and Learning in the Communication Society and Greek national represen­tative to E.U. DG Education and Culture. He has published over 80 papers and has given over 100 invited talks and presentations. He has coordinated, directed and participated in over 40 research and development projects funded by EU, Greece and Cyprus. His research interests are related to education and to large-scale information and database systems. His real interest is people, and he is currently studying theology.

Maria Andreou



Dr. Andreou is a tutor, on the Master study programme “Information Systems”, and also a researcher at the Open University of Cyprus. She holds a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science from Patra’s university, GR, since 2004.  She got a BSc in Computer Science, in 1996, from the Cyprus University. The previous three year she was a visiting lecturer at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Cyprus University (2005-2007) and a lecturer at the computer science department of Intercollege, Nicosia (2004-2005).  She has a number of published papers in various international refereed journals and conferences. She used to worked as a programmer and research assistant in European and Greek projects, as a member of the Research Unit One (RU1) of the Research and Academic Computer Technology Institute from 1998-2004. Such projects are: Computer Experiments for Concurrent Engineering Brite-euram Project (CE2) , Critical Resource Sharing for Cooperation in Complex Systems FP5 IST/FET STREP Project (CRESSCO), ALCOM-FT: Algorithms and Complexity in Future Technologies etc. Her main research interests are algorithms, algorithmic engineering and information systems.

Anna Mavroudi



Anna Mavroudi studied Mathematics in the University of Thessaloniki (1998-2003) and Information Systems in the Hellenic Open University (2004-2007). In her MS thesis she studied e-learning systems. She has been working as a teacher in Mathematics (2002-2007) and at the Hellenic Open University as research staff member specialist in educational technology (2007-2008). At HOU she had studied and customised the functionality of open source digital libraries (dspace), suitable for e-learning content. She has also studied metadata standards and their use in the description of the digital assets included in the digital library (best practices of the use of metadata in relation to the needs of HOU). Her research interests include: applied mathematics, learning theories, e-learning, m-learning, multi-user virtual environments, educational open source software, metadata and ontologies.
Currently, she is a phd student (at the Open university of Cyprus) in the fields of educational technology and artificial intelligence.


Panagiotis Kyriakou



Born and raised in Paphos, Cyprus. Served my military service, 26 months in the National Guard of Cyprus, as an officer. Studied at Patras, Greece, at the Computer Engineering and Informatics department of the University of Patras with degree thesis: “Web-based Intelligent Tutoring System of ‘Computer Systems Evaluation Techniques’ that led to my MSc Thesis: “A web-based graphical tool for managing domain knowledge in an Intelligent Tutoring System”. Worked at the RA CTI (Research Academic Computer Technology Institute) as a graduate student at the e-Learning Sector ( Then moved to Cyprus, worked at Hypermedia Ltd. in a project for the Ministry of Education, then as an IT administrator of the “POLITIS” newspaper, and now I am research assistant at the OUC. Research interest: e-Learning. General Interest: Photography, painting, Cinema
