The key goal of this project is to show in actual practice and by a scalable example, that it is possible and economically feasible to substantially supplement the meager and sometimes irrelevant educational opportunities normally available to residents of remote and insular regions in the EU:

(a) through modern ICT-based distance education and training for young pupils and adults alike;
(b) using innovative thorough technologically and methodologically approach;
(c) utilizing existing infrastructure at otherwise declining schools and revitalizing their operation in order to become multi-purpose local learning centres accessible to all;
(d) establishing learning partnerships between schools, training centres, firms, research facilities and universities to their mutual  benefit for personally meaningful educational activities and courses;
(e) producing exemplary educational material to last beyond the project, that would be otherwise lacking in these regions and would lead people either to exclusion or to migration.

REVIT project also aims to fulfil educational/social objectives:

  • to increase awareness regarding issues concerning education in less privileged European areas
  • to make people living in remote areas feel less excluded from urban “education” emerging aware of the benefits of continuing their learning practices by giving them the means with which they can acquire and update their knowledge/skills in their hometowns, contributing in this way towards equal educational opportunities for all European citizens
  • to contribute to the exploitation of existing ICT infrastructure to address real needs,
  • to contribute new ideas for distance learning in school/adult education practice and policy,
  • to promote long-term adaptation of the framework for other areas and domains at European level.

Thus, to enhance lifelong learning opportunities for people living in isolated rural areas REVIT project aims to provide an ICT-based Distance learning (DL) Framework in the form of:
•    a concrete technological framework for distance learning (Distance Learning Service), exploiting second generation web developments for e-Learning, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous ODL modes, including e-Learning 2.0 features and tools enabling users to be proactive for accessing, retrieving, creating, storing, sharing and using educational content and communicating their needs and solutions with others, while acquiring and utilising ICT skills in support of their own learning.
•    a set of methodologies in reference to an ICT based distance learning scheme, suitable pedagogical approaches and guidelines for identifying the educational needs of a remote community with the involvement of its members, for content design, for course delivery, for development and selection of suitable ICT tools and implementation.

Furthermore, the project aims to experiment on this approach by applying it in five (5) selected European remote rural and insular areas in partner countries, in order to test and to compare - where possible - the DL Framework to existing traditional education practices, by defining representative test cases in terms of needs and corresponding subjects for enhancing school education and adult education.
